History Of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity

The Birth of Omega

On November 17, 1911, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity was founded at Howard University by Edgar A. Love, Oscar J. Cooper, and Frank Coleman, with the guidance of Professor Ernest E. Just.

The fraternity’s name comes from a Greek phrase meaning “Friendship is essential to the soul.” From its founding, the cardinal principles of Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift were established—principles that continue to guide chapters such as The Tenacious Chapter today.

Despite early challenges, the founders’ resolve ensured Omega Psi Phi would grow into an international fraternity committed to excellence and service.
